What Happens During a Shirodhara Session: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Shirodhara looks calm and simple from the outside, but if you've never had one, not knowing what happens next can make it hard to relax. This is a plain, step-by-step walkthrough of a Shirodhara session at CORAN Boutique Spa, on the 3rd floor of Night Hotel Bangkok, a 5-minute walk from BTS Asok — what actually happens in the room, not the theory behind it.

Step 1: arrival and a short consultation. You arrive a few minutes before your slot and change into a robe in a private room — there's no shared waiting area. A therapist asks a few quick questions about your skin, any scalp sensitivity, and how you're feeling that day, then you lie face-up on the droni, the wooden treatment bed shaped for this position.

Step 2: Indian head massage. Every Shirodhara session at CORAN opens with a short Indian head massage, worked into the scalp, neck and shoulders with warm oil to release tension before the pour begins. This part alone runs about 10 to 15 minutes and is usually where guests start to properly unwind.

Step 3: the oil pour. The therapist then positions the dhara patra, the suspended vessel that releases a continuous, steady stream of warm herbal oil onto your forehead, aimed at the point between the eyebrows. The oil is checked by hand and kept at roughly 38–40°C — warm enough to trigger relaxation, not so warm it startles you. The stream doesn't stop and start; it flows without interruption for the rest of the treatment. Most guests describe drifting into a state between waking and sleep within the first ten minutes.

Step 4: after the pour. When the pour ends, you're given a few quiet minutes before getting up — standing too quickly after Shirodhara can feel disorienting. A shower is included afterward to rinse the oil from your skin; your hair will still carry some oil afterward, since a full hair wash isn't part of the treatment, so a hair tie or light scarf is useful for the trip back to your hotel.

Booking it. At CORAN, Shirodhara is offered on its own as the 40-minute Indian Head Massage & Shirodhara treatment, or as part of longer Ayurveda packages — the 90-minute Cure of Ayurveda v1.5 combines it with a full-body Abhyanga massage. See the full menu and prices for every option. It's not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy; if you're further along, ask us directly or see our prenatal massage guide. Same-day slots can usually be booked online, and we're open daily 10:00–21:00 — see directions from BTS Asok.
